Gum disease is a highly prevalent dental problem today. Gum disease can occur in two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis.
Gingivitis is a milder, more easily handled disease, and it only affects the gums. Periodontitis is more severe, and can lead to major complications in the mouth. Both of these diseases occur below the gum line in a shallow, v-shaped crevice called the sulcus. As the sulcus becomes more diseased, the crevice grows, and the gums recede lower on the tooth.

Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, Los Angeles family dentist, suggests certain things a patient can do to prevent - or at lease decrease the likelihood of - gum disease. Patients should be in the habit of brushing well two to three times daily and flossing once per day. Using a soft bristled toothbrush will also help. Having a healthy diet also aids in the health of one's gums: whole grains, vegetables, meats and dairy products are all beneficial. Snacks eaten between meals can increase the likelihood of gum disease. Also, regularly visiting your dentist and getting a full checkup and professional cleaning will help the teeth and gums to stay healthier.
Gum charting is a way that dentists keep track of the health of gums and determine whether or not the patient is suffering from gum disease. Dentists can use advanced computerized technologies to measure the height of your gums, and then chart them on a graph. Using the results, a dentist will be able to determine how healthy the patient's gums are and recommend how to handle any problems.
