Laser dentistry technology can now be used for drilling cavities. The speed of this new high-tech laser is nearly equal to a high-speed drill, without the noise, vibration, no drill smell and frequently, without the pain. In fact, many patients have found they can get a cavity filled without the use of any anesthesia.
As with earlier varieties of laser dentistry, another important use is in recontouring gums. Where a patient feels that their smile is "too gummy" this new laser is used to remove the extra gum, but it is now far faster, with less pain and faster healing.
In the treatment of periodontal disease, dental lasers can be used on infected gums to greatly reduce inflammation. Such treatment keeps the area free from returning bacteria for up to 30 days.
