A mouthguard is a flexible, plastic material used by athletes such as football players or basketball players.  It protects the teeth against impact. 
Another kind of mouthguard is used to protect the teeth against clenching and grinding at night.  Called a nightguard, this type of mouthguard is made of a harder, plastic material.

Pain in the jaw could be a result of clenching or grinding your teeth.  You should be examined by a dentist to see why this is taking place.  One solution could be wearing a hard plastic night guard when sleeping to protect the teeth and the joint of the jaw against this type of pressure.
