In the study,  528 Americans, representing our very diverse population, were selected to make “snap judgments” on the photos of eight individuals based on a one to 10 scale rating such characteristics as attractive, intelligent, happy, career success, friendly, interesting, kind, wealthy, popular with the opposite sex and sensitive to other people. With a rating of one being not at all and 10 being “extremely”. The respondents were unaware that they were judging before and after cosmetic dental improvements. Two sets of photos showing four people before cosmetic dentistry improvements and four post dental makeovers. None of the individuals had extreme dental issues such as missing or rotten teeth. The study reported that two of the individuals had minor improvements, two had moderate and four underwent major cosmetic dental reconstruction. The After photos received a boost in the ratings in every category. But the most significant jumps after the cosmetic reconstruction showed in the attractive, wealthy, popular with the opposite sex and career success.
