TMJ stands for the temporomanibular joint. It is a joint which connects the lower jaw to the skull. The actual term that should be used is temporomandibular disease. A lot of people say they have TMJ, which means there is an issue with the disc or the cartilage. The joint most likely has been damaged or there is a clicking or popping when they open or close their mouth. The damage is usually due to clenching, grinding or a bad bite.
