Periodontal disease is a disease of the gums. Plaque and tartar have bacteria in them and can affect the gums; which over time can destroy the bone of the jaw.  A result of gum disease includes bleeding gums and loose teeth. There are different types of periodontal disease. The first stage can be gingivitis, which is just bleeding gums. Later stages can include bone damage, bone loss and loose teeth.
