Why is a temporary crown needed?

A temporary crown is needed because once the tooth is prepared and shaved down, it has to be measured and impressions need to be made. Then the measurements are sent to the lab so a crown can be made.
The tooth is covered because it would be very sensitive if left open and the tooth could move.
