Additional reasons for receding gums could be due to the bristles of the toothbrush itself.  I only recommend soft bristled brushes because medium or hard bristles can damage the rim of the gums.  Gum recession also could be due to clenching or grinding of the teeth, which can also cause gum recession in the mouth.
