How Smoking affects Periodontal Treatments
Dec 8th, 2008 by Dr. Kourosh Maddahi DDS
Smoking causes a decline in the effectiveness of the periodontal treatment since its chemicals slow down the process of healing, making treatments less successful.
Tobacco smokers are also at risk of losing the support that the bones give to the gum tissue and teeth by producing deep pockets in between them. The deeper these pockets are, the more prone it is to bacterial infection that will slowly tear down the gum tissue.
When the infection gets worse, it will make the teeth detach from the gums since it does not have a hold on it anymore.
