Today, there is a high-tech way to fill cavities without traditional drilling.  An air abrasion drill uses fine aluminum oxide powder, silica or baking soda to remove tooth decay and prepare the tooth for further dental procedures.  This type of drill is quiet and does not cause the tooth to vibrate, so no anesthetic is required.

Before the air abrasion technique was used, dentists had to remove healthy tooth structure in order to access a patient’s cavity.  Now with this micro-dental procedure, the area of tooth decay can be precisely addressed and removed, leaving the healthy tooth structure.   A dental sealant protects the tooth from further decay and damage once the cavity is filled.

The air abrasion drill often is combined with DIAGNOdent procedure.  This laser system indentifies areas of tooth decay that normal dental x-rays cannot detect.  Instead of a prodding the teeth with a metal tool, DIAGNOdent using a laser light to take examine the tooth for even the smallest cavities.
