During routine dental checkups, Dr. Maddahi examines a patient’s teeth down to the microscopic level.  Using a high-resolution 40x by 1600x Trinocular Compound Microscope, the doctor and his hygienists are able to observe the bacteria found in a patient’s mouth.  This simple and quick procedure allows Dr. Maddahi’s team to identify the bacteria that can lead to gum disease and then design a dental hygiene plan to help eliminate it.  If these bacteria were not treated, over time the patient could be at risk to lose their teeth.

In the past, dentists used a metal dental probe or explorer to test for signs of decay on the surface of the tooth.  Dr. Maddahi uses the DIAGNOdent laser system to identify even the smallest areas of decay that x-rays typically do detect.  The DIAGNOdent probe is simply placed on the surface of the tooth in order to test for any sub-surface dental caries.

If decay is detected, it can be removed quickly and painlessly with the revolutionary air drill.  Unlike a traditional dental drill, an air drill uses a fine stream of aluminum oxide or baking soda powder particles to gently remove the areas of decay by air abrasion.  Patients no longer have to hear the whine of a drill and there is no burning smell (as the teeth do not get hot) and no vibration.  Another plus, no anesthetic is generally needed during this micro-dentistry treatment.
