How is Drill-free Dentistry Possible?

If everyone could have perfect teeth without ever having a dentist drill them it is possible that the dental health on planet earth would be in a lot better condition. After all, the prospect of sitting in a chair and having teeth drilled, smelling that unique smell that only a burning tooth can produce, is enough to deter most anyone.
There are ways to fix teeth without the use of noisy, smelly, painful dental drilling. Los Angeles cosmetic dentist, Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, a high-tech dentist in Beverly Hills, uses this technology whenever possible.
“I want to revolutionize dentistry. We strive for the fastest, best result with the least pain”, explains Dr. Maddahi. “With the Waterlase MD Turbo, we are accomplishing our dentistry procedures faster than ever, with less pain, less waiting and less recovery time.”
This Waterlase MD Turbo is a cool laser. Prior to this technical breakthrough a laser was inherently heat based. This noteworthy distinction, Waterlase, is the single non-heat based laser used in dentistry; means there’s no more drilling or burning to remove tissue and bone. In fact, many patients have found they can get a cavity filled without the use of any anesthesia.
Dr. Maddahi also uses a painless air drill. Drill-free dentistry, by air-abrasion, operates like a mini-sandblaster. It is very accurately aimed at decay and removes it with a fine aluminum oxide (baking soda) powder. There’s no vibration, no burning odor (the teeth don’t get hot), no whine of the drill. There is also no anesthetic required and therefore no lasting numbness throughout the day.
Dr. Maddahi has paired drill-free dentistry with the DIAGNOdent laser system. It discerns decayed areas prior to their appearance as a hole on the surface of the tooth. This means locating areas of decay that x-rays do not detect.
This patient testimonial illustrates the procedure, “I just came from the most pleasant dental experience EVER! Yes, I did say pleasant and dental in the same sentence! Me, who is not entirely uncomfortable with going to the dentist (only had one cavity thus far), but afraid to go as it has been 5 years since my last appointment! After the cleaning and x-rays was the dental exam with the doctor. Dreaded because I KNOW I have a cavity. He carefully looks over all my teeth.
“He couldn’t see the cavity on the x-rays. Was there hope that there wasn’t a cavity? No. He has this laser that finds all cavities on the surface of the tooth. I thought it was pretty cool, no more picking with that metal tool. I felt nothing with the laser, not a single thing, just a light in my mouth. But, then it beeped and we found the cavity! Ugh!
“Ready to schedule the next appointment to come back to remove it, Dr. Maddahi told me he could do it right now. Looking for reasons to leave I said, ‘I am breastfeeding, so I will wait until I am done.’ He explained there is no anesthetic needed. It’s painless. ‘OK, let’s do it, promise me it won’t hurt?’ He smiled and said yes.
“Sure enough, it was painless and no anesthetic! I was done in 15 minutes, and the best part was NO DRILL! How you ask? The cavity is removed with air and powder so only the cavity is removed and not the good part of the tooth.”
