What Causes Dental Implants To Fail?

Implant failure typically occurs between one and ten years after the implants are placed. The two most common reasons dental implants fail are because of jawbone issues or bacterial concerns.

Jawbone Concerns

At times, the jawbone doesn’t grow around the implant well enough and become properly fused. This may be caused because of smoking or poor-quality bone in the jaw area.

Bacterial Concerns

Without proper oral health care, periodontal disease can become advanced and damage the jawbone. This can ultimately cause the implant to loosen.

Dental implant failure can also be caused by an improper bite, improper placement of the implants, lack of gum tissue, or a number of other reasons. Once dental implant failure occurs, it’s important to get them fully and properly replaced by a specialist experienced in dental implant revision.

Who Is A Candidate For Revision Dental Implants?

If you’re experiencing the following concerns, you are a likely candidate for dental implants. Ideal candidates are in good health generally and have no serious medical concerns.

  • Your implants are loose or shifting in the jaw
  • You are experiencing, chronic, throbbing pain or numbness at or near the implant site
  • Your gums are receding at the implant site
  • Your dentist has discovered bone loss around your implants
  • Your implant is causing chronic sinus problems
  • You have aesthetic concerns or bite problems due to poor implant positioning

What Happens During The Revision Implant Procedure?

During your revision procedure, Dr. Maddahi uses 3D imaging to evaluate how your dental implants are working.

Depending on the state of your gums, he may perform an advanced laser technique to fully clear any infection in the tissues surrounding the implant. This procedure also helps to stimulate the growth of bone, which supports the teeth better.

If the jawbone requires it, Dr. Maddahi will also use bone grafting materials or growth factors at the implant site to strengthen the support structure under the implants.

In some cases, Dr. Maddahi will need to repair improperly placed implants or remove them altogether to properly reposition and secure them.

Recovery

After your revision dental implant procedure, you should be able to return to work or your typical activities and routine in 2-3 days. During your recovery process, there may be some swelling, pain, or minor bleeding. Patients who needed more extensive work to revise their implants, such as a new set of implants, will have about three weeks of swelling, bruising and minor bleeding while their mouth and gums heal.

Eat soft foods only during this recovery period. We will provide antibiotics and ask that you use an antimicrobial mouthwash during your recovery to ensure there the risk of infection is greatly minimized.
