Anti-Aging Dentistry: What you can expect during your visits

If you’re interested in looking younger without undergoing dangerous, invasive surgery, perhaps your research has led you to anti-aging dentistry. Before signing on the dotted line, however, you’ll want to know more about the process and what to expect.

This article is designed to give you a brief walkthrough so you understand the general steps and feel empowered to pursue your options further. To provide the insight you need, Beverly Hills celebrity dentist Dr. Kourosh Maddahi is here to outline what you can expect from your anti-aging dentistry appointments.

Appointment 1

Every case is unique, but Dr. Maddahi says most procedures require four visits—two shorter visits and two longer sessions. “The first visit is a consultation during which I discuss with the patient what they are looking for in their smile. I tell them what I think will help get them to those results,” says Dr. Maddahi.

During the visit, Dr. Maddahi also discusses the shapes of the patient’s teeth as well as tooth color and length. Once the treatment direction has been determined, the teeth are shaved down and temporary veneers and/or crowns are applied. From there, Dr. Maddahi’s expert technicians create porcelain veneers or crowns for the patient. These are ready in about a week.

Appointment 2

The second appointment is shorter and usually takes place the next day. Patients return to Dr. Maddahi when they are no longer numb so he can check their bite and make sure everything is progressing as it should. This appointment generally takes 10-15 minutes.

Appointment 3

The third appointment takes place a week later when the permanent veneers or crowns are finished. “This visit is anywhere from 2‒4 hours in length, depending on the amount of work being done. I usually recommend my patients eat before they come,” Dr. Maddahi says.

At the appointment, Dr. Maddahi places each veneer or crown in place, shaping them to capture the unique and natural look of each patient’s face. “About 20 percent of the shaping occurs when the veneers or crowns are already in place because I’m looking at a final product, and I’m matching the tooth to the shape of the patient’s facial structures.” Once Dr. Maddahi is finished, patients can leave immediately. If they have not been put under for the procedure, they will experience nothing more than a slight numbness.

Appointment 4

Patients return the next day for their final appointment, during which Dr. Maddahi checks their bite one final time and makes sure the patient is comfortable now that the numbness has worn off. “This one is a little longer than the first appointment, as I want to be very sure that the bite is correct, but the patient is typically out the door with their brand-new smile in under an hour,” Dr. Maddahi says.
